There is a beautiful saying, “The poorest man leaves his children the richest inheritance”; it is so true that he toils hard, works relentlessly, would even stay hungry , live like a pauper but get every possible thing to keep his children happy, like Will Smith in “Pursuit of Happyness”. Even in poverty he inculcates in his children the treasured values of honesty, patience and truthfulness.
The concept of celebrating Father’s Day emerged in the year 1910 by a married daughter, Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd. The thought stuck her mind, seated in a church in Spokane, Washington attending the Sunday sermon on Mother’ Day. The sermon discussed about the sacrifices made by a mother for her children. Mrs. Dodd could relate all these sacrifices made her widowed father William Jackson Smart. A Civil War Veteran he had nurtured her and her five brothers with all the love and good values. She recognized the hardships and the endurance her father has taken to raise them. She not only wanted to salute the sacrifices and suffering of her father, but also wanted to give recognition to all the fathers’ who are special to their children.
Mrs. Dodd wanted to commemorate 5th June which was her fathers’ birthday to be celebrated as Father’s Day. But later the 3rd Sunday of June became a popular as the day of honoring the selfless, courageous and loving fathers of the world. It was established as a permanent national observance by President Nixon in 1972.
It is also believed that Father's Day is more special for the loving daughters. Roses are generally worn on the Father's Day: Red to be worn by the daughter whose father is living, while White roses for those whose father has passed away.
