Peridot formerly pronounced as “pear-a-doe” but the correct usage of term is “per’-id’-ot”. Available in the hues ranging from light to dark yellowish green to olive green is owing to the presence of Magnesium and Iron Silicate. It is the most prized member of the quartz family because of its exquisite green colors that radiance in the night. With 6.5 and 7 on the Mohs scale of solidity the olivine gemstone displays double refraction which creates the scintillating stir.
Peridot also known as the chrysolite “The Golden stone “is the August Birthstone and usually given on the 16th wedding anniversary. Peridot is known as the “Gem of the Sun” by the ancient as it help in dispelling the evil spirits and dissolving the enchantments. This gemstone treasured most in the Cleopatra’s chest was initially thought to be the Emerald. This “Evening Emerald” with the zodiac sign of Leo makes use of its full powers as a talisman.
This golden green gemstone when set in gold is thought to dispel the terrors of the night and is believed to bring the wearer success, peace and good luck. The Egyptians thought it cured diseases of the heart, protection from negativity, a health aid for the entire body, a stress reducer, a relaxant, and a fever reducer. Peridot in the powder form is used as a remedy for asthma. This Chinese stone when held under the tongue, is also believed to lessen the thirst in fever.
Chinese Peridot is mined for the past few years in the Region of Hunan. It produces upto 10 Carats faceted materials. The color of the this gemstone is comparatively lighter in color in comparison to Peridot and more golden green in color to the presence of the maximum mineral. But amazingly the cost of the Chinese Peridot is comparatively reasonable.
