About Black Diamond Pendants and Necklaces

In black diamonds consistency of the color is equally important. So a good quality diamond will have a rich blackish color which spreads evenly across the stone. Also, it is not unusual for black diamonds to have minor surface inclusions and polishing lines.

Today maximum number of black diamonds available in the market are enhanced by a safe form of irradiation and heat. However, they are absolutely natural and real diamonds that have been treated to improve the color.

Black diamonds generally weigh a bit more than colorless diamonds: a one-carat black diamond will be smaller than a one-carat colorless diamond.

Why Our Black Diamond Rings Make for The Perfect Ring

If you want to make a statement and looking for one-of-a-kind gift for this Christmas, our unique collection of fancy black diamond engagement and wedding rings is for you.

A Small Tale Behind Engagement Rings

Engagement rings have been the ultimate symbol of love for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, they wore rings on the third finger of the left hand to mark where the “vein of love” went directly to the heart, starting a tradition that continues today.

Our Black Diamond Rings

Available in a variety of our most popular design settings, you can opt for a simple solitaire ring or an eye-catching halo design. Choose from a choice of our preciously sourced metals including platinum, white gold, yellow or rose. Our rings are set with fine-quality diamonds and can be ordered in any precious metal. We carry all-black diamond pieces as well as rings accented with white diamonds.

The most important value factor to consider when shopping for black diamond engagement rings is the quality of the center stone where clarity is the most important aspect of a black diamond’s quality. We at MySolitaire hand-selects only the best quality conflict-free gems that are expertly cut for maximum beauty. Our stunning pieces are perfect for the one-of-a-kind beauty in your life.

How to Remove the Ring Safely

When taking off your engagement ring, don’t pull on the gemstone: it doesn’t affect the gem but can stretch the metal that holds it in place over time, making the setting less secure. You can use mild dish soap to clean black diamond rings.

Why Us

In business for over a decade, our selection is truly unmatched. Whether it’s for a flattering moment for that special day, or just a gorgeous gift for the most important person in your life, MySolitaire’s black diamonds take care of it. Besides, we also have a special collection of diamond wedding bands.

Whether your preference is different colors of gold, or multiple presence of gemstones in your diamond ring, you’ll find what you’re looking for here. You’ll also find colored stones, including black and blue diamonds along with the white to show off your new jewelry this Christmas.

Also, any of our designs comes complete with its own independent diamond certification.

As in 1947, Frances Gerety penned the slogan “A Diamond is Forever,” a line so elegant and effective that we are still using it almost 70 years later. It indeed helped underscore the MySolitaire diamond’s significance as an enduring, unbreakable symbol of love.

How to buy the Perfect Black Diamond?

The popularity of black diamond jewelry especially engagement rings has surpassed all colored diamonds. Beautiful, stylish and affordable, black diamonds carry a unique appeal. However there is not much information available regarding these gems. We have in this article endeavor to give you correct information that can help one choose the right diamond.

Quality is King – AAA or AAA+ quality black diamonds are the best. However, while buying black diamonds do not pick a diamond below AA quality. Make sure that you properly check all the quality parameters- Clarity, Cut, Color and Carat. Clarity is the most important aspect of black diamond quality; however the quality standards of black diamonds are very different. In black diamonds only the table and crown clarity is taken into consideration. Though inclusions are typical to black diamonds but since the diamonds are opaque the inclusions below the girdle do not affect the beauty of the diamond. So make sure that the face of the diamond is smooth and does not have any inclusions, pits, white spots, cracks etc.

The color of the black diamonds is not usually pitch black rather dark metallic black, dark greenish black or deep brownish black. Rich dark colored diamonds are more sought after; however in black diamonds consistency of the color is equally important. So a good quality diamond will have a rich blackish color which spreads evenly across the stone. Dull, patchy, grayish diamonds are not good.

Black Diamond Color and Treatment

The symmetry of the diamond shape in blacks is more important than the cut. The cut refers to the number of facets on the diamond but in blacks there are no set standards for black diamonds. Shape refers is the overall form of the diamond, which should be proportionate. Though asymmetric and other geometric shapes are quiet famous in blacks but when buying standard shapes like round, oval or heart then proportions become crucial.

Treated or Not Treated that is the Question…Well the answer would probably be a Treated Diamond. The reason being, that naturally occurring AAA quality black diamonds are very very rare. This rarity not only makes them difficult to find but also makes them very expensive. To address this scarcity the suppliers started treating the not so perfect or dull or different colored diamonds to get the desired color. Today maximum number of black diamonds available in the market is treated. However, there is nothing wrong about treated diamonds; they are absolutely natural and real diamonds that have been treated to improve the color. In simple words by treating diamonds humans finish the unfinished work of mother earth. Treating gemstones or diamonds is a very common and ancient phenomenon. Emeralds, rubies, tanzanite, sapphire most gemstones are treated to either enhance the color or improve the clarity.

Buyers Tips

  • It is advisable to always buy a certified black diamond.
  • Shop online you will get more options at lesser rates. Choose a reputed jewelry portal. Ask for complete details, videos and close-ups of the diamonds and thoroughly inspect the diamond.
  • In case of natural black diamonds ask for GIA certified diamonds. GIA does not evaluate treated diamonds.
  • Choose AAA or at least AA quality black diamonds, anything below AA quality will have visible flaws on the diamond table.
  • Check the location of the flaw or inclusion. Sometimes even AA diamonds with minor flaws make a good purchase. Occasionally a diamond is graded AA because there is a white spot or a pit at the pavilion or there is an inclusion on the pavilion or the culet has a problem but the face of the diamond is absolutely fine; such diamonds are very cost-effective as they are less expensive and the flaw can be easily hidden in the setting.
  • Black rhodium settings merge with the black diamond thus are a great way to make the diamond look blacker and bigger. Black rhodium also gives an edgy look to the jewelry

Experiment with shapes if you want your jewelry to stand out. Try rose-cut diamonds they look bigger and unique.

Black Diamonds v/s Diamonds

  • Diamond is an allotrope of carbon like graphite. The carbon atoms in a diamond are arranged in a variation of the face-centered cubic crystal structure. Black Diamonds are polycrystalline diamonds found in alluvial deposits. These diamonds are made up of many tiny diamond crystals and are therefore porous.
  • Diamonds due to their extraordinary optical characteristic have very few impurities or inclusions. They are clear, colorless and mostly transparent. Black Diamonds have heavy inclusions mainly graphite that is blackish in color thus making them opaque.

Black Diamonds v/s Diamonds

  • Diamonds have high optical dispersion that is the ability to disperse light in different colors which in turn grants them the brilliance and sparkle. Black diamonds being porous and opaque do not disperse any light, rather the black inclusions absorb the light, and thus they do not sparkle like white diamonds.
  • Diamonds are the hardest materials existing, but this hardness also makes them very brittle. A harsh blow can cause the diamond to break. Black diamonds are fragile due to their porous composition and heavy inclusions. A harsh blow can cause the diamond to break or chip.
  • Diamonds are valued for their transparency that is clarity, color, size and cut for the brilliance. Brilliant cut in round diamonds is know to grant maximum brilliance to the diamond. Diamonds are usually cut in limited styles to maintain the brilliance. Black Diamonds are also valued for the color, clarity, size and cut. Black diamonds can be cut in any desired shape without bothering about the brilliance.
  • Diamonds are one of the most expensive gems, due to their rarity. They make a great investment as their value has witnessed a constant acceleration. Black diamonds are cheaper than white diamonds but their value has grown many folds over the last five years.
  • Diamond has look alikes like Cubic Zirconia, synthetic diamonds, crystals, silicon carbides or similar stones like White topaz and more expensive white sapphire. Onyx, Jet, Black crystals etc.
  • Diamonds are treated to improve the white diamond’s color grade color and clarity, including laser drilling to remove inclusions, application of sealants to fill cracks. Black diamonds are mostly treated to enhance the dark gray color to black, they may be irradiated or heat treated.

BLACK DIAMOND GRADING & CERTIFICATION

Black diamonds have a distinct construction, typically have inclusions and are opaque. A perfectly flawless black diamond does not exist. Therefore while grading black diamonds only the clarity of the table and crown that is the face of the black diamond is considered. Since the diamonds are opaque the inclusions below the girdle do not influence the face of the stone and can be easily hidden under the settings.

Clarity or purity refers to how clear and void of inclusions is the diamond. In black diamonds, however, more crucial is the locations and visibility of the inclusions. Black diamonds typically have inclusions that may or may not show on the surface. As long as the inclusion is not disrupting the shape, color or face (top surface) of the diamond the diamond can be graded high.  There can be like gray spots, scratches, pits, cleavages, cracks, clouds, cavities, crystals, feathers, surface grains etc. Learn more about the inclusions here…

Color is the second most crucial criterion for grading black diamonds. The best quality diamonds have a uniform and lustrous mid-night black color; however it a rare exception.   Most diamonds when mined are either gray, dark green, charcoal sometimes even muddy white. These diamonds are therefore treated to get a rich black color. Apart from the color being dark it is equally important that it should spread across the diamond uniformly. The diamonds with gray or white color patches are not considered good. Black diamond color is usually referred to Fancy Black, as its one of the fancy colored diamond.

Shape or cut of the black diamonds is equally vital. A disproportioned or off-shaped diamond does not sell. Though a slight defect can be covered by the setting but major defects affect the diamond grading. The problem of disproportioned occurs only when there is an inclusion at a crucial place of the diamond. The cutters are compelled to retain or camouflage the inclusion to avoid the breaking of the diamond or decreasing the carat weight.

Carat weight– Black diamonds are rare and larger stones are even rare. So like all diamonds, the cost of the black diamond too escalates with the size of the diamond. The bigger the diamond the higher will be the price considering the other grading factors as well. Another interesting point to note here is that black diamonds are denser and are therefore heavier. A white diamond of a particular millimeter size will weigh more than the black diamond of the same size.
