Sapphire Gemstone Treatments

Sapphire the September Birthstone exists in all colors. Like all gemstones Sapphires are also valued for its color. However when mined the stone rarely has the perfect color display, thus a fine color Sapphire is tremendously.  The raw Blue Sapphire is often colorless and very pale, white looks muddy and the red gem would actually be brownish pink. Thus considering the high demand the stones are treated to enhance the color and clarity. Point to be noted here is that they are natural sapphire just treated for color.
Sapphires are treated in different ways, the most common are the

  • Heat or High Temperature Treatment
  • Diffusion Treatment
  • Flux or Glass Filled or Thermal Treatment

Heat or High Temperature Treatment
Heat treatment is the most common Sapphire Treatment. The controlled heating technique improves/enhances/corrects the color as well as the clarity of the gem. This process is successful only when the gem already has undertones of the same color. Like the dull Blue Sapphire after the heart treatment becomes rich blue. The color acquired from this treatment penetrates though the stone and is permanent.

Diffusion Treatment
Diffusion is a more recent and controversial method of artificially changing the natural color of a sapphire. The process involves diffusing beryllium into the surface of the already faceted gem at a very high temperature. The color obtained is limited only to the surface thus re-cutting or re-polishing can expose the inner color. It is a less expensive treatment thus the diffused Sapphires are less costly. Most common shade of diffused sapphire is orange, but pinkish orange, yellow and rarely blue. Such sapphires should have information about diffusion mentioned on their invoice.

Flux or Glass Filled or Thermal Treatment:                                                   This is treatment is also limited to the surface of the gemstone to improve its clarity. The gem is coated with glass or other crystalline materials and then heated to melt the coating. The melted fills in the cracks or cavities to give the stone a smooth finish.  It is an expensive and notorious treatment since it is difficult to detect

Padparadscha Sapphire Facts

Padparadscha Sapphire or Pads is a mineral corundum pinkish-orange in color. The fine mélange of pink and orange gives this fancy colored Sapphire a unique identity. It gets its name from the Sinhalese word Padamaraga meaning a lotus blossom. Also known as the Sri Lankan Sapphire its exact color is still unclear; the color may range from pale pink, to orangy-pink to yellowish-pink to pinkish-orange. Non-treated Natural Padparadscha Sapphires are the rarest and the most valuable fancy colored Sapphire. It can cost almost as much as the natural blue Sapphires, costing several thousand dollars per carat.

Resembling the Ruby gemstone, Padparadscha Sapphires are clearer than Rubies. Padparadscha is evaluated for its crystal like clarity. A good quality gems should not have inclusions visible to the unaided eye. Now a days many Padparadscha Sapphires are heat-treated to improve their appearance. Measuring 9 on the Moh's scale, Padparadscha Sapphires are very tough and durable; suitable for use in any kind of jewelry. Oval and Cushion-cut are most popular but this gem is available in all shapes. Originally discovered in Sri Lanka, are also found in Vietnam , Madagascar and Africa.

Synthetic Ruby: An affordable alternative

Ruby the King of Gems and the plush red July Birthstone is a very rare gemstone. Evenly colored, clean, high quality and large sized naturally occurring Rubies are extremely difficult to find. In fact there are very few sources of Rubies, making natural Ruby the most expensive gemstone of the world almost four times the cost of a Diamond. Being the hardest existing gemstone low-quality stones are also used for many industrial purposes. The demand of Rubies is high as opposed to the very scare supply. Consequently the market quenches the supply with Synthetic Rubies.
Synthetic, Created or Lab created Rubies, are produced in the laboratories using different methods. Point to remember here is that Synthetic Rubies are different from Treated Rubies. Treated Rubies are naturally existing real Ruby gemstones that have been treated to enhance the color, where as synthetic rubies are man-made stones created in the lab using different techniques. Most of the gemstones available in the market today are treated using different methods.
The first and oldest method is fusing potash alum at high temperature with chromium. Chromium is the element responsible for the red color of the Ruby. Other popular methods are Pulling process, flux process, and the hydrothermal process, however the most common is flame fusion. These Rubies created in the labs are perfect without an impurities or imperfections related to color. In fact this perfection is the identification of a synthetic Ruby though the exact method can only be detected in a gemological lab.
Since the Synthetic Rubies are created in abundance using low costing techniques they are inexpensive. Only an expert can differentiate between a synthetic and real Ruby. So if your budget is low and you want to wear this gem or you want to add the dash of red in your jewelry collection try Synthetic Rubies. They are affordable options and make good gifts.
But if you still want to go for real ruby jewelry, checkout our Ruby Jewelry Collection.

Red is for Ruby: July Birthstone

Ruby the July Birthstone derives its name from the Latin word 'rubens', meaning 'red'. The intense red color of the Ruby instantly reminds us of passion, love, power and prosperity. Especially since Red is the color of love, Ruby becomes the undying symbol of this emotion. One of the four precious gemstones along with Diamond, Sapphire and Emerald, it is popular as the King of Gems.Click here to view Ruby Jewelry

A superior quality Ruby may cost far more than a Diamond of the same weight. Ruby like other gemstones is valued on the basis of its color. Ruby gets its exotic scarlet color because of chrome. However the presence of chrome also causes large number of fissures and cracks inside the gem crystals. As a result very few Ruby crystals get good conditions in which they can grow undisturbed to considerable sizes and crystallize to form perfect gemstones. Thus Rubies of 3 carats and above are very rare. No doubt large, uniformly colored natural Rubies without inclusions are priced more than Diamonds in the same category.

The rarity of good colored Rubies and high demand has lead to various treatments of the gemstone to get the perfect color. In fact ninety percent of the Rubies available in the market are treated in some or the other way. Rightly said perfect Rubies are as rare and precious as perfect love. So if you find one do not let it go.

Get familiar with Diamond.

The lucky birthstone for the April born is the pristine and rare gem, Diamond. ‘Diamond’ finds its origin in the Greek word “adamas” for “hardest metal”. It’s quite an appropriate coinage for nature’s hardest substance. The Diamond-like quality of everlasting and invincible springs from this reality. It is an allotrope of the mineral carbon like graphite. Its toughness lays its unique atom arrangement called the Diamond cubic, however it is not impervious to breaking. It will chip and break if it receives a blow to any one of its four cleavage directions.
Diamond is found embedded in kimberlite rocks, thrown out by volcanic eruptions from the mantle layer of earth. They are also found in alluvial planes through exposure and erosion in coastal regions. A Diamond exhibits high refractive index, high dispersion, and high resistance to chemicals. Its absorption of white light and refraction into rainbow colors is perhaps the primary characteristics of Diamond. Besides the colorless variety, it’s available in broad spectrum of colors in red, yellow, green, brown, black, blue orange, purple and pink. Its value is determined in terms of its grading by the 4Cs. Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat weight.  The luster of a diamond is coined as 'adamantine', which simply means diamond-like. There are two categories of Diamond market one for gem trade and the other for industrial purposes. Diamond fields are located in South Africa, Brazil Russia, and US etc.
Diamonds are known to exhibit metaphysical qualities namely balance, clarity and abundance. Its curative powers help to flush out toxins, in healing ailments related to brain and pituitary glands.

Aquamarine and it's Beryl family

Aquamarine, the March Birthstone is a form of ‘Beryl’ mineral; however there are many more members in this family.
The term ‘Beryl’ is derived from different languages like Sanskrit and Greek. The Greek term, ’beryllos’ means precious blue-green-color-of-sea-water stone. In its pure form Beryl is colorless.  The presence of impurities gives rise to numerous colors and gemstones of the Beryl family.  Aquamarine, Emerald, Goshenite, Heliodor, Morganite, Red beryl are few other members of the Beryl family.
Aquamarine which is the blue colored Beryl and is aptly called the gem of the sea water in Latin. Its blue, blue-green or green color is due to the iron ore element. The pure blue color is achieved through heat treatment. Brazil being the leading producer of Aquamarine also discovered the largest weighing Aquamarine stone of 110 kg.
Emerald is perhaps the most valued and rare Beryl. Its lush and vibrant green color is due to the presence of chromium and vanadium. Emeralds are often flawed by mineral inclusions and fractures.
The Golden Beryl occurs in pale yellow to brilliant golden color while Helioder Beryl in Greenish Yellow shades. The presence of iron ore gives the stone its beautiful golden color. Compared to Emerald the Golden Beryl has very few flaws.
Goshenite is colorless and it owes its name to the place it was first found in Goshen in Massachusetts. However, it’s not its purity but the presence of other elements makes it look colorless.
Morganite Beryl essentially occurs as pink in color although orange and yellow varieties are also found. Also called "pink beryl", "rose beryl", "pink emerald", and "cesian beryl; the pink color is due to the presence of Manganese ions. It was named after JP Morgan the financier of New York Academy of Sciences.
Last but not the least, the rare Red beryl, also called "red emerald" or "scarlet emerald, gets its color from Manganese ions later substituted by aluminium.
